51 may 2016 | luxurylv.com M ention the words international diplomacy and consulates, and one thinks of the United Nations in New York or Washington D.C., not Las Vegas, the Entertainment Capital of the World. Yet about 25 people living in Las Vegas are honorary consuls to countries around the world. Unlike career diplomats, an honorary consul is an unpaid, very prestigious position held by well- respected community leaders who represent another country in the country where they live. One such person is Jonathan Warren, chairman of the Liberace Foundation and honorary consul of Monaco, the tiny principality on the French Riviera known for its luxe hotels, glamorous Casino de Monte-Carlo, prestigious Grand Prix motor race and royal family. "So many interesting connections exist," said Warren. "Grace Kelly and Cary Grant, who filmed To Catch a Thief in Monte Carlo, came to Las Vegas on April 11, 1955, to promote the movie. Photos were taken of them at the Sahara, and when the hotel closed in 2012, I bought the big front desk photo. "A couple of weeks after Grace Kelly was in Las Vegas, she met Prince Rainier III in Monaco. And on Jan. 30, 1956, President Eisenhower confirmed Rainier's appointment of Henry Leigh Hunt, the globe-trotting capitalist who built the historical 1944 Huntridge Theater, as Las Vegas' first honorary consul of Monaco. After Hunt retired in 1963, the position remained vacant for 47 years, until 2010 when Warren received the title. "Forty million people from around the world come to Las Vegas every year. That's more than Paris and London combined," said Warren. "Wherever I go, whether it's Africa or Thailand, when people ask me where I'm from, I only have to say Vegas and everyone knows it."
